The screen jumped up one character line at a time. ![]() This provided a much nicer user experience, at the expense of some extra time it took to reach the end of the file. Physical terminals used to offer a smooth scroll mode, where lines would scroll up one scanline at a time instead of one character cell at a time, as is the norm these days.
